Change Management

Course Description

The biggest barrier to successful organizational change is often the people themselves.   No matter how beneficial a change may be, it requires overcoming the inertia of, and concerns around departure from, any currently accepted approaches.  Change management is the strategy that can be used to overcome this inertia, unfreeze the organization, and pave the way for swift and complete adoption of the required changes.

This program takes participants through a three phase approach to managing change across an organization. It starts with reviewing the overall change process, its associated stages of maturity and respective keys for success at each stage.

The program then explores understanding the required changes and any implications across an organization.  The gaps between the current and the envisioned future states are defined.  Organizational dependencies are then added to link the gaps with their critical dependencies.  After ranking and prioritizing the gaps, each is considered in terms of it relative importance to the overall goal.  From this process a phased implementation approach may be considered, or ruled out.

Next a map is created that identifies all the stakeholders who will be impacted by the change.  For each stakeholder role a vector diagram is completed that documents the change required of them, their likely concerns, the benefits associated with the change, and support that would be available.  Factors that will inhibit or prevent change, again by stakeholder group, are isolated and documented.

From this basis, a change management plan is developed that lists the critical success factors for each stage of the change and how each will be enabled through communication, support, training, and tools.  Other factors that will need to be addressed or mitigated are then added to the overall plan.

Lastly an overall communication plan is developed that shows the key messages will be required to be communicated by whom, when, and by what channels.

Participants will leave with an understanding of the critical elements that enable or inhibit change across an organization. They will be familiar with an approach that can be used to understand and manage change.  They will have the knowledge and approach to create effective change management and associated communication plans.
