In this webcast, 3GS's Martyn Lewis leads a discussion that includes Kelly DeTommaso and Elissa Hoehn of Merck & Co.’s Global Commercial Learning team, who share their first-hand experiences of how the 3GS blended and continuous learning model is changing the way Merck thinks about program design and training deployment.

Merck & Co., a global healthcare solutions provider of prescription medications, biologic therapies, animal health and consumer care products, engaged 3GS to help them architect a blended and continuous learning approach to one of the company’s critical and transformational training initiatives for the global team of sales representatives and their managers. Merck’s Global Learning team has been a proponent of "blended learning" for years, believing that training should NOT be an event in a classroom but rather a "pulsed" process that consists of knowledge learning, application and reinforcement before, during and after the formal training event.

Merck’s physical classroom courses were engaging and interesting but participants did not have the opportunity to experience the learning concepts in their every day jobs to help make the learning come to life. Other challenges included building the appropriate pull-through resources for post-classroom reinforcement to encourage behavior changes. Merck’s objectives were to create an ongoing learning program designed to truly change the way the representatives approach their business and their customers. This transformational training requirement combined with budget pressures, improvement of remote technologies, and pressure for representatives to spend more time in the "field" and less time in classroom training and/or traveling to training, inspired Merck to rethink the possibilities and move toward more virtual and continuous learning options.

The Continuous Learning methodology pioneered by 3GS demonstrated how learning and performance could be accomplished in a live virtual setting with less formal classroom time and yet be more effective than a traditional ILT approach. By adopting a blended and continuous learning approach, learners spend less time in the “classroom” and more time with their managers, coaches and subject matter experts as they implement new methods and skills in their everyday work life.
